Trip to El Quelite
El Quelite is a great day trip destination from Mazatlán
MEXICO
El Quelite is a small old town that lies on the banks of the Quelite River, about 33 km North of Mazatlán. The local economy is based on cattle breeding, agriculture, fruit growing, and dairy farming. You can feel the history as you walk down the cobblestone streets and admire all the charming colourful houses along the sides.
We visited this quaint small town on a Sunday, and it was bustling with activities. Local vendors set up tables along the main street selling souvenirs, hats, toys, sandals, and food. There were horses lined up on the streets ready for tourists to hop on and ride around town. There were several artisan shops along the main road selling potteries, leather products, wood and metal pieces, clothing, and more.
We had lunch at the Restaurante El Meson De Los Laureanos, where it served authentic Sinaloense cuisine, prepared with home-grown ingredients. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by smiling servers. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with photos, paintings, antiques, pottery, flowers, and artifacts. As soon as we sat down, they brought out a tray of locally prepared snacks such as fresh cheese, curd cheese, salsa, chilli sauce and tortilla chips for us to sample.
After looking through the menu, I decided on the grilled steak (arrachera), and it was the most delicious piece of meat I have ever had in my life. The meat was tender, juicy, and flavourful, every bite was a flavour explosion in my mouth. Each meal also came with desserts, we had a bowl of rice pudding and a bowl of caramel pudding that were bowl licking good.

A wonderful small town to explore for a day when you want to venture out of the city of Mazatlán. Happy exploring!

With our bellies filled, we strolled along the main road to a church that was built in the 17th century. Visitors are welcome to go inside the church and admire the beautiful oil paintings on the walls. Next to the church is the main plaza where families gathered under the shade of palm trees.
Further down the main road stood a statue of a guy with a ball beside his hip, which symbolized an ancient game played by the Aztecs and Mayans in Mexico 3000 years ago.
