We were excited to make a day trip to Las Labradas, which was about a 50 minute drive north of Mazatlán. This area is an archaeological site located along the coast of Sinaloa, Mexico. The site is known for its extensive collection of ancient rock carvings and petroglyphs, which date back thousands of years. These carvings depict various shapes and symbols, including animals, humans, and abstract patterns.

Las Labradas is a unique and important site for understanding the cultural and historical significance of the indigenous groups that once inhabited this region. Visitors can explore the site and marvel at the intricate details of the petroglyphs, which provide a glimpse into the beliefs and daily lives of these ancient civilizations.

To get to the site you need to turn off of Hwy 15D and travel about 7 km on a dirt road through the little town of La Chicayota and then to the small museum and ticket office. Along the way there are little signs to direct you but Google Maps is also correct with its directions.

Currently, general admission is 90 Pesos per person but free for citizens and residents on Sundays. The museum is small, but gives a good overview of the history of the area. The surrounding walkways, and landscaping are well cared for with many flowering plants. There is also a shaded rest area just off the beach.

We were also surprised to come across what appeared to be a dried up eel and were amazed at the resilience of these carvings despite many being washed over by the ocean waves day after day.

When you arrive at the beach you can turn right (north) or left (south) to view the carvings. We found that the carvings to the south were more defined but we were quite surprised by the amount of carvings as you looked out onto the rocks more and more seemed to appear as we explored the shoreline.

When you arrive at the shore, the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, with its sandy beaches and turquoise waters, adds to the unique history of the rock carvings of Las Labradas. They have a sign at the start of the trail showing an outline of the trails. As well they have Spanish and English signs providing directions to the carvings on the beach.

We found this location to be a great way to be able to see history up close, and is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Happy exploring!
