Mount Robson
Exploring Mount Robson and the surrounding area
CANADAPOPULAR
If you have ever driven on the Yellowhead Hwy heading to Edmonton, you may have seen the magnificent Mount Robson. It is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and can be seen from the hwy. We have driven pass it several times over the years but never explored it more than a quick stop. We have always wanted to make a full trip of it and really see what Mount Robson and the surrounding area had to offer. We planned to stay for several days and hoped for the best when it came to the weather.
The park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including black bears, elk, mountain goats, and eagles. The hiking trails are well-maintained and cater to different skill levels, ranging from easy walks to challenging treks. We started at the visitor center early in the morning to get registered and then made our way to the trailhead for Kinney Lake.
Conveniently right next to the campground was Stellar Descents Whitewater Rafting. We booked their scenic float tour as it was during the salmon run and it was prime opportunity to spot eagles and other large raptors.
On the tour, we were treated to information about the salmon life cycle. The passing scenery was epic, with both mountainous views and eagles as we gently floated down the Fraser River.
For this trip we stayed at the Tete Jaune Lodge and Campground which is right on the Fraser river. You could hear the bubbling of the water as it meandered by and the site had an amazing mountain view.
To the right there were snow peaked mountains and to the left you could see the river and the mist that came off it in the morning. An absolutely stunning spot to rest for the night.
Our next excursion was horseback riding in this amazing scenery. The ride was a full 4 hours through some mountain switchback roads leading to some spectacular views of the valley and snowcapped mountains. Janet and I had a blast on this adventure and were happy that the weather cooperated to give us these views.
Mount Robson and the surrounding area is definitely worth a trip. I can't believe that up until this journey we had previously just passed through on our way to other destinations. We recommend making the trip and exploring some of this amazing BC backcountry. Happy exploring!
We got an absolute picture perfect day with not a cloud in the sky as we started our trek. The trail was about 13 kilometers round trip on a very well maintained trail. We reached the lake at around 10 am. The wind was calm and it was a perfect mirror reflection for the surrounding mountains.

We arrived to a beautiful mirror image off of Kinney Lake
