Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park and its abundant wildlife
USA
Theodore Roosevelt National park quickly turned into a favorite national park destination for us. We travelled to the park with the expectation of witnessing some nice views and landscapes. We were very surprised with the amount of wildlife we got to see. From Bison, prairie dogs, and wild horses.
The National park is broken into two sections designated the North section and the South section. We did both sections in a day trip, however they are about an hour apart via the highway. If we were to do it again I would dedicate one day to each section. This would allow for doing some of the longer hikes in the parks as well as completing both areas in one day was a lot of driving.
We started our day at the North section and were immediately greeted by some Bison at the entrance!
We began our day in the park at the Oxbow overlook in the North section, where we enjoyed a short easy trail with a stunning overlook.
Theodore Roosevelt national park truly surprised us with the amount of wildlife that call these unique landscapes home. The park is a great destination and gives each visitor a unique experience as you never know what wildlife will be around the next corner.
Add this destination to your list and happy exploring!
Throughout the park we encountered groups of bison at almost every turn.

On the way out of the North section we stopped at the Cannonball mystery geological formation. This area is where bizarre round rocks are slowly eroded out of the sediment layers through the natural erosion process.

We then made the hour long drive to the South unit and the painted canyon visitor center. This center had some great information about the area and the large park sign.

During our drive through the South unit we stopped at a prarie dog town where Aliya had fun watching them as they popped up out of their burrows and ran across the grasslands.

On our way to the Boicourt Overlook we had to stop as some wild horses crossed the road Infront of us and then made their way over the rugged landscape.

The Boicourt Overlook was just a short walk down a dirt trail and then the views opened up at the point to give you a vast perspective of the varied landscape.
