Mammoth Cave National park includes Mammoth Cave which is one of the world's longest known cave systems. The park is home to thousands of years of human history and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Region.

In order to explore the cave visitors need to join a guided tour through the National Park service.

The guided tours are booked through recreation.gov and book up quick. We recommend to book well in advance, as well as arrive approximately 30 minutes early of your tour time. We booked two tours for our visit. The Domes and Dripstones and the Historic tour.

When we arrived we went directly to the Visitor Center which had information on the extensive cave system. Along with displays showing the layout of the caves.

To start our tour Domes and Dripstones tour we were picked up in green busses from the pickup area next to the visitor center. This is a two hour underground tour with about a 10 minute drive to the cave entrance. Aliya was excited to hop on the bus and quickly picked a window seat.

The stairs took us deep underground into another world. One downside of taking tours is that there is no escaping the crowds, however we did get a lot of great detail from the park ranger as we toured the different features of the cave.

The passages changed at every turn from steep declines to flat narrow passages and then opening up to wide rooms.

The historic tour was less of a decent and we were able to walk to the start of the tour from the Visitor Center. Many of the cave sections were very wide and in some areas the cave walls had multiple shades of colours.

Some neat highlights from the tours were seeing the cave crickets up close. They have long antenna and legs to feel their way around in the dark. Also there were unique stalactites and draperies to view as we made our way through the cave on the tours.

Back on the surface we continued to explore the area and learned about how the locals used to navigate the green river via ferry service. With so much to explore we found the Mammoth cave national park junior ranger tasks to be the most involved.

Taking nearly the full day to explore and find all the answers in the workbook. After completion Aliya was excited to get her Junior Ranger certificate and badge as a mark of accomplishment.

With so much to see at Mammoth Cave National Park a visit requires some pre-planning. It's worth the extra effort with all the great history and unique underground world that you get to witness.

Be sure to check tour times and availability in advance and have a great visit to Mammoth Cave National Park. Happy exploring!
