Day trip to Playa Isla De La Piedra (Stone Island)
A short boat ride from Mazatlán to enjoy a more rustic beach day
MEXICO
Playa Isla De La Piedra (Stone Island) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mazatlán. The beach is wide and flat and goes on for miles and miles. In contrary to its name, Stone Island is not actually an island but it's a peninsula that is connected to the mainland.
You can get there by car, but you must drive all the way around a major inlet, which takes about an hour. Or you can take a 5-minute boat ride at the Embarcadero Playa Sur next to the Port of Mazatlán for 35 pesos round-trip. The water taxis go back and forth frequently starting at 8 am and the last boat back to the mainland is 6 pm.
The restaurant we picked was El Velero. The shrimp tacos were very tasty and the location was rustic with a sand floor. They had sand toys for the kids and Aliya thoroughly enjoyed playing with the buckets.
A great day trip and highly recommended. Happy exploring!
And last but not least, you can't go to Stone Island and not enjoy the beach. The beach has a very gradual slope so you can walk out a ways away and still only be in knee deep water. Aliya had a blast in the warm calm waters at Stone Island.

We saw some local families taking a big cooler of food with them to the beach. For our excursion we just grabbed a couple of lounge chairs at a restaurant along the beach, ordered some food and drinks and hung out for the day. There are several activities you can do in the area such as riding ATVs, riding the waves on a banana boat and horseback riding along the beach.
Aliya loved the boat ride across the water, and best of all, young children were free on the boat!
