The Catlins
Exploring the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand and all its wild wonders
NEW ZEALAND
During our New Zealand road trip, we journeyed further southward into the enchanting region known as the Catlins. Renowned for its rugged natural beauty, the Catlins is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the untamed landscapes of the South Island. Nestled in the southern reaches of the island, this picturesque region is known for its breathtaking landscapes and abundance of wildlife. From lush forests to rugged coastlines, the Catlins offers a diverse range of natural beauty.
Along the coastline, we were fortunate to encounter massive sea lions, witnessing their awe-inspiring struggle for dominance and hierarchy. The Catlins is also home to some stunning scenery and our first stop was to the iconic Nugget Point, which provided panoramic views of the surrounding ocean and cliffs. We even got to see the end of a rainbow as we looked out into the water past the rocks.
Next we made our way to the Waipapa Point Lighthouse which is a historic lighthouse that offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. There was a well-maintained path leading to the lighthouse, and just steps away there were several sea lions lying on the beach.
Next we headed to Slope Point which marks the southernmost point of the South Island, it offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the roaring Tasman Sea. The scenery here is truly mesmerizing, with windswept trees bending towards the ocean and dramatic cliffs plunging into the deep blue waters below.
As you navigate the pathway to the point, you'll feel a sense of isolation and tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere. The area is known for its extreme weather conditions, with strong winds often battering the landscape. Despite this, the unique flora and fauna that thrive in these harsh conditions are a testament to the resilience of nature. Standing at Slope Point, you can't help but appreciate the raw beauty and untamed power of New Zealand's southernmost tip.

Suddenly the sea lions decided to get into a rivalry and began growling at each other and we got to witness their fierce strength in action. It truly felt like we were in a nature documentary getting to see the power of these large animals in real life. Standing on the beach we could hear their growls, and even smell their fishy breath as the wind blew in from offshore.
