Rottnest Island
Visiting the Island and seeing the unique Quokka up close
AUSTRALIA
We were spending some time in Perth and heard about the unique Rottnest Island just off the coast. We found it was an ideal place for a day trip and the local tour companies have busses that can pick you up in the city and take you right to the pier to catch the boat. We wanted to go around the whole island and so we included renting bikes with our tour tickets.
The main draw to Rottnest Island was the opportunity to encounter quokkas, adorable marsupials that are native to the island. These small and friendly creatures are known for their cute smiles, making them a favorite for tourists wanting to take memorable selfies. At first we were not sure if we would get to see any of the quokkas as we started to cycle around the island, but soon enough around a corner several were hanging out and munching on some grass. We took full advantage and took some photos up close with this adorable creature.
Whether you choose to relax on the pristine beaches, get some ice-cream and snacks from the store, explore the island's rich history, or simply appreciate the natural beauty, a trip to Rottnest Island is guaranteed to leave you with unforgettable memories. Happy exploring!

We then had an incredible encounter with a quokka at one of the beach rest stops. These small marsupials are known for their friendly and curious nature, and this particular quokka was no exception. As we leaned our bikes up to grab a seat and a bit of our snack, I spotted one hopping in the nearby grass.
I got some photos of him and then he followed me into the picnic area, seemingly unfazed by my presence. Surprisingly, the quokka hopped closer me and gently sniffed around and got even closer. It was an unforgettable moment of connection with this enchanting creature, and it left a lasting impression on me.
