Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake
Admiring the natural wonders of a pink lake

As we made our way down the west coast towards Perth we made a stop at the Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake near Port Gregory. We had stayed in the small town of Kalbarri which was about a 30 minute drive to Hutt Lagoon. We were told that the water at Hutt Lagoon is usually at its most vivid pink around midday, between 10 am and 2 pm. There was no entrance fee and we were able to park at different spots around the lake to get different views. We didn't swim but apparently that was also allowed. With the high salt content and salt crystals everywhere, the lake bed appeared to be sharp and we didn't want to chance getting injured.
To ensure we arrived mid-day we started our trip to the lake after visiting the Kalbarri volunteer Pelican feeding. This event starts at 8:45 in the morning and was by donation to help with the cost of the small fish. Janet was excited to start the day with such a close encounter with wildlife.
After the morning's excitement we had our own breakfast and began making our way down to the Hutt Lagoon. Even from the roadside we were able to see the pink hue in the lake. As we got out and explored, it was so unique to see so much salt built up around the edge, almost snow like. It was such a strange natural wonder to see.
The lake gets its striking pink color from the presence of a type of algae that thrives in high concentration of salt. As we approached the lake, we were in awe of the vibrant pink hues that stretch as far as the eye can see. We found that the lake's vibrant color was best viewed from the lookout points. The slightly higher elevation seems to really make the color brighter.
Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake is truly a must-visit destination, it offers a surreal and unforgettable experience. Happy exploring!
I found a secluded spot to launch my drone and as soon as it got up in the air the vibrant pink of the lake appeared even brighter. The contrast between the lake and the adjacent blue of the ocean was shocking.
