Stopping at a quaint small town on our way to Durango

On the way to Durango from Mazatlán there is the town of Copala which is an old mining town with a laid back atmosphere and a small but unique restaurant. We were travelling from Mazatlán and getting to the town takes you on the windy number 40 highway. When you arrive to the town google maps tries to send you down some off the beaten path dirt roads. Do not follow Google's directions, just follow the main cobblestone road! I decided to ignore Google's directions and instead follow the narrow cobblestone road which eventually lead us to the restaurant, town square, and church.

The real star of this town is the restaurant. Restaurante Alejandro is a tucked away gem that packs flavour into its dishes. We had a wonderful lunch served on rustic pottery dishes. For desert we had their famous Banana cream pie. The pie was served on an unassuming plastic plate but was absolutely delicious. The restaurant only accepts cash so bring your Pesos!

Other than the restaurant there is a small square with the towns letters, some murals, and an old church. You can see all the sights in about 15 minutes.

It makes for a quick after meal walk around to explore.

Copala is a joyful stop with great food if you're on your way between Mazatlán and Durango. This town helps you to slow down and take a breath as you travel the rest of the way on the fast paced 40D highway. Worth a stop if it's on your way! Happy exploring!
